2018 ISA EDMONTON SECTION STUDENT COMPETITION!

2018 ISA EDMONTON SECTION STUDENT COMPETITION!

March 14, 2018

Our 3rd annual ISA Edmonton Section Student Competition took place at NAIT on March 2nd & 3rd, 2018. We welcomed 24 brilliant students in instrumentation and automation-related programs from post secondary schools across Alberta including: U of A, NAIT, SAIT & U of C.

The ISA Edmonton Section Student Competition is an amazing opportunity to socialize with other like-minded students, practice technical skills and to be mentored by industry professionals.

After the competition we reached out to our ISA Edmonton Student Section leaders to find out more about what all took place...

What was your role with the ISA Edmonton Section Student Competition?

Shreya, ISA Edmonton Section Student Section Liaison & NAIT Student Section President - I was involved with organizing and itinerary preparation for NAIT, U of A, SAIT and U of C participants. I also handled accommodation bookings, transportation facilities and meal arrangements for the participating teams from U of C and SAIT.

Nirwair, ISA Edmonton Section U of A Student Section President - I played a role of project planner for this competition. My responsibilities included leading brainstorming activities, preparing planning sessions, and assigning responsibilities for the event. Also I co-hosted fun team building activity for this competition.

Rahul, ISA Edmonton Section Student Section Volunteer - I hosted lunch and team building session at the student competition with my wonderful colleague Nirwair. Also, I was heavily involved in project planning and preparation.

Competition Overview

Aaron, ISA Edmonton Section NAIT Student Section Advisor - This year we accepted 8 NAIT students, 4 U of A students, 8 SAIT students and 4 U of C students. Students were divided into 8 teams of 3. Competitors were provided with training on the Friday and then teams were presented with technical challenges that they need to solve on Saturday.

What Was This Year's Competition?

Aaron - This year’s competition focused primarily on troubleshooting electrical wiring issues, programming, technical and mechanical abilities as well as team building and collaboration to perform the required process control tasks on the Festo equipment.

Who Won?!

Aaron - Our winners were Jason Trout (SAIT), Fengling Feng (NAIT) & Mohammad Mansouri Habibabadi (U of C).

Participant Feedback

Tube bending was enjoyable experience as I had the opportunity to perform hands-on technical work!

My exposure to the PLC’s for the first time has helped me gain knowledge and experience with programming process control systems that are utilized in industries.

I Leaned how to tune a feedback control loop.

I worked with people who had lots of prior knowledge of things we were tested at competition.

I made lots of new friends.
